AI Forward: Leading Innovation, Research and Learning at NC State University

Team members Will Cross and Meredith Graham recently presented at a campus-wide event dedicated to exploring the transformative power of artificial intelligence in innovation, research and learning at NC State University.

Meredith Graham served on a panel discussing AI Ethics in Research: Transforming Discovery and Innovation. Graham talked about trends in scholarly publishing using AI, how to cite and manage intellectual property as a scholar using AI, and how scholars opinions of the tools are shifting.

Will Cross presented on grant funded research work that lays the groundwork for the creation of a Responsible Curriculum for AI. This curriculum will provide educators with clear guidance and reliable training materials as they work to understand legal and policy issues in AI so they can critically engage with (or, as appropriate, reject) AI as a pedagogical tool.

Cross outlined the process of current activities which will lay the foundational groundwork for creating the curriculum:

  1. Develop a Detailed Roadmap for the Responsible AI and Copyright Literacy Curriculum. Complete research, conduct interviews, and review survey data to produce a detailed plan of research needs in each of these topics.

  2. Select a Cohort of Experts to Serve as Content Advisors. Select responsible AI experts to advise on our work. These experts will be selected from a broad range of research universities and will either serve as computer science, humanities, and law faculty or serve as AI professionals.

  3. Host the Experts at North Carolina State University. Host a convening of these responsible AI experts and selected scholars to analyze our research, provide feedback on how to improve it, and discuss innovative ways to publish it.

  4. Publish a Research Needs Report. Publish an open-access report that encourages user feedback and discussion. This report will identify key areas for future development of RAI curriculum resources, so that we and other scholars can begin the work of building the materials.
